Education in Ali Maksum Krapyak Islamic Boarding Schools adopts a mixture of well-integrated formal and non-formal systems. Islamic school with Pesantren model is a form of non-formal education. Besides in order to maintain the good old ways, pesantren is a vehicle for character education in the form of bandongan and sorogan (learning by classic religion book/kitab) methods.

A formal school is carried out not only to fulfill the need of community but also to develop a modern learning and teaching methods. Besides Islamic-related topics, the school also teaches general subjects such as social and natural sciences. The education institutions in the Ali Maksum Krapyak Islamic Boarding Schools are as follows:

1. Middle School or Madrasah Tsanawiyah

Madrasah Tsanawiyah of Ali Maksum is a formal education institute which is in a same level with middle school. It has an  accreditation status of  A. Madrasah Tsanawiyah of Ali Maksum integrates Pesantren local curriculum with national curriculum (curriculum from Ministry of Religious Affair and Ministry of Education).

Hobby and talent development in Ali Maksum Islamic Middle School is carried out through some extra curricular activities such as nightly study-club, press education, wall magazine, student bulletin, youth science club, leadership training, four languages speech training, cooking skill, youth red cross, martial art of  Pencak Silat Pagar Nusa and the other branchs of sport (football, volley etc),  Islamic music such as Qosidah and Hadroh,  art of Qur’an recitation, Muhadloroh Arabiyyah (Arabic Club), and English meeting.

2. High School or Madrasah Aliyah

Madrasah Aliyah is a formal education institution that has a same level with Senior High School. It is a level higher from the middle school. Ali Maksum Islamic High School conduct the education with three majors:

1. Religion
2. Natural Science
3. Social Science

3. Collegian Institute of Islamic Studies

Collegian Institute of Islamic Studies is a non-formal college which is carried out by Pesantren Ali Maksum for collegians who are interested to learn deeper about Islamic knowledge. The students study in their respective university in the morning and attend the Institute activities in the evening and also at the dawn after Subuh. They will learn topics such as religion knowledge, preaching and leadership training.

To guarantee the quality of education, the Institute are taught by university-level instructors and Islamic scholars (alumni of national and foreign universities) who are experts in their respective fields. It will bring the students to have wide perspective in Islamic teachings.

4. Islamic College or Ma’had Ali

Ma’had Ali has been carried out since 2007. The Islamic College is a university-level of pesantren education which offer study of Tafsir and Hadis. The participants of this program generally is alumnus of pesantren who want to strengthen their study of Tafsir and Hadis. The curriculum is a combination of the classic and contemporary one.

The majority of participants are collegians in several universities in Jogjakarta.  Learning and teaching activities of Islamic College, which are supported by Kyai (the highest rank of preacher of Islamic boarding school) and Ustadz (the teachers of Islamic boarding school), take place  at night. The admission test of Ma’had Ali is conducted between July-September.

5. Qur’an Memorization School or Madrasah Tahfidzill Qur’an

Madrasah Tahfizh intends to lead santri (the students of islamic boarding school) in memorizing Holy Quran. Furthermore, it aims to broaden santri’s knowledge, having good behavior based on Qur’an morality teachings, and hopefully they can apply the Qur’an teachings in their daily lifes.

Students (santri) who have enough capability can memorize the wholeness of Qur’an in 2-4 years on average. However if they wish not only to memorize but also to understand its interpretation and have deep knowledge of it, then it will take longer. Tahfizh school students have to finish the regular Qur’an recitation without memorizing (binnazhri, so they can read Qur’an  fluently) and have strong motivation to memorize the Holy Qur’an.

6.      Islamic School or Madrasah Diniyah

Madrasah diniyah is a school that has specialty in religious knowledge. Madrasah Diniyah of Ali Maksum was formed based on society spiritual need to obtain the basics of islamic education.

The main target of this institue is the students ranging from primary school to high school who intend to get islamic knowledge. Because of that, Madrasah Diniyah was carried out with a special management which can fulfill the requirement of society outside the pesantren.

Madrasah Diniyah  of Ali Maksum begins the new school year as  other schools and have the education level as follows :

1. Awwaliyah Grade  (Basic), 4 years ( grade 1 – 4 )
2. Wustho Grade (Intermediate), 2 years .
3. Ulya Grade (High), 2 years.

7.      Qur’anic School for Children or TPQ Plus

This Qur’anic school is a Qur’an education institution for children. Mostly, the students live close to the pesantren. This school pay special attention for children psychological aspect during the teaching process. Besides  learning about praying technique, this school  using Qur’an learning method in accordance to Arabic grammar.

The subject of Ali Maksum Qur’anic school include: mastery of a handbook named Qiro’ah Muyassaroh,  memorizing of several short Surahs (the collection of some Qur’an verses), daily prays, practice of worship, story telling, playing and singing together.
